A change in policy.

On October 19, 2007, Aetna, a major insurer, changed its policy to cover bilateral cochlear implantation. Its Clinical Policy Bulletin now reads,

Aetna considers uniaural (monaural) or binaural (bilateral) cochlear implantation a medically necessary prosthetic for adults aged 18 years and older…

There it is: any Aetna insuree now has access to bilateral cochlear implantation. This is as good a time as any to announce that I’ll be having my other ear implanted on December 17, 2007.
